Adelka Hancova
Adelka is a Master’s student at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography studying Climate Science and Policy. She earned her undergraduate degree in Political Science and Environmental Studies and is now working to expand her understanding of the climate crisis through a STEM-focused lens.
In the Deheyn Lab, Adelka has been conducting research on microfiber and microplastic release during the laundry process. She experiments with different textiles, UV light, and various detergents, washing them and quantifying the resulting fiber and plastic shedding. She is deeply interested in the fast-fashion industry and uses her small brand, Delki.co, to raise awareness about overconsumption and to highlight the importance of mending, upcycling, and not buying new.
When she is not in the ocean, you can find Adelka behind a sewing machine, skiing, running, traveling, learning about new cultures and listening to good music!
